Doctor Barrow's Professional Profile
Dr Michael Stuart Barrow is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in knee surgery. He practices from Sunninghill Hospital.
Dr Barrow attended St. Peter's Preparatory School and then matriculated from St. Andrew's College Grahamstown.
Dr Barrow qualified as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2002 at the University of the Witwatersrand. He was awarded the registrar prize in orthopaedics in 2000, 2001 and 2002. After qualifying as an Orthopaedic Surgeon he spent 3 years in the adult arthroplasty unit at the Johannesburg General Hospital, during which time he started the Sports Knee Injury Clinic. This was followed by a one year fellowship at the London Knee Clinic and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in London 2006. Dr Barrow was awarded a Smith and Nephew fellowship and spent time working with Dr Freddie Fu, Dr Charles Brown, and Dr Leo Whiteside in the USA.
Dr Barrow returned to South Africa in 2007 and has been doing knee surgery at Sunninghill Hospital since then. He set up the Sunninghill Knee surgery and has been doing knee surgery since then. He uses Robotic techniques, Computer Navigation, Patient specific instrumentation,arthroscopic and other modern techniques in performing state of the art surgery.
In 2011 Dr Barrow opened the Waterfall Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre with his wife Jessica - a physiotherapist.
Dr, Barrow was the past Secretary of the South African Arthroplasty Association, a position he held from 2005 to 2013.
Dr Michael Barrow is the past president of the South African Knee society, a position he held from 2019 to 2021. He is also a member of the European Sports and Knee Society and of the International Society of Knee and Sports Surgery.
Dr Barrow travels and lectures on knee surgery extensively both locally and internationally. He works as a consultant for Depuy, Smith and Nephew and Arthrex with whom he is involved in research and education. In 2014 Dr. Mike Barrow was elected on the international advisory board of the Early Users of the Attune Knee System.
Michael is married to Jessica and they have two sons Stuart Douglas and Ian Michael and a daughter Emily Hope. All three of them are at St Peters Prep School. Mike enjoys road running, golf, and fishing.
He also has a very keen interest in wildlife and wildlife photography. In 2021 he qualified as a Fgasa guide. He plays the bagpipes and the piano. In 2005 he completed the Comrades Marathon and in 2006 the London Marathon.
Michael's grandfather, Hugh, was a well renowned General Practitioner in Johannesburg. His father Brian is an Orthopaedic Surgeon as are two of his brothers Andrew and Robert. Peter, the youngest of the four brothers, is a specialist Gastro-Enterologist.
